TOPIC OF THE MONTH

Millions of children are heading back to a new school year.  Routine physical exams help insure that the students are in good health before school begins.  When scheduling health care appointments, don't overlook a dental checkup for your child.  I recommend that a child be seen in our office every six months to examine and clean their teeth.  We will look for probelms with decay as well as the growth and formation of their teeth and jaws.  Unfortunately many parents don't realize that serious tooth decay is an infectious disease.

More than one-half of all children aged 5-9 years have at least one cavity or filling.  A painful tooth or chronic dental problem can lead to difficulty eating, speaking and concentrating.  Children with chronic dental pain may not always voice their problem.  They may appear anxious, depressed or tired.  Many parents or teachers may not recognize the problem, this can lead to poor sleep, learning difficulties and missed school.

Regular dental checkups and preventive care, such as cleanings and fluoride treatments provide kids with "smile insurance".  Routine exams can uncover problems that can be treated in the early stages, when damage is minimal.  This helps prevent painful, chronic conditions and can save money in the long run.

At Forest Lake Family Dental we are happy to see children of any age.  I recommend that each child be seen between ages 18 and 24 months.  We will evaluate the childs dental health and growth progress.  This also helps your child to become familiar with the dental office and alliviates fears that sometimes accompany the dental visit.  It is imparative that parents and siblings keep the idea of a dental visit in a most positive tone, many dental fears are perceived and not from actual "bad" experiences.
